☀️ Hyderabad Today — the morning bulletin
Every morning at 8 AM IST we publish a short bulletin on Facebook and Instagram: the day's weather, verified traffic diversions, and one or two things happening in the city — including camps, tournaments and community events.
🇺🇸 America Samacharam
Most Hyderabad families have a son, daughter or grandchild studying or working in America. This section explains US immigration in plain words — how the green-card queue works, what the Visa Bulletin means, and the student path from F-1 to H-1B. Facts come only from official US sources (USCIS and the US Department of State), and updates are posted on our Facebook Page and Instagram under the America Samacharam label.
📅 The Visa Bulletin, in plain words
- Every month, the US Department of State publishes the Visa Bulletin — the official list that decides whose green card can move forward.
- Your place in the queue is your priority date — usually the date your employer's labour application or immigrant petition was filed.
- The Final Action Dates chart shows which priority dates can be approved now; Dates for Filing shows who may submit paperwork.
- When the date printed for your category and country is later than your priority date, your case is "current" — it can move.
⏳ Why India's queue is the longest
- US law caps how many green cards each country can receive in a year, no matter how many people apply.
- India has far more applicants than its yearly share, so employment categories EB-2 and EB-3 for India carry waits of many years.
- Dates sometimes move backwards — called retrogression — when demand in a month exceeds the visas available.
- That is why a single month's small forward movement in the bulletin is big news in Hyderabad homes.
🎓 The student path: F-1 → OPT → H-1B
- After graduating in the US on an F-1 visa, students can work in their field for 12 months on OPT (Optional Practical Training).
- Graduates with qualifying STEM degrees can extend OPT by 24 more months — up to 36 months in total.
- The H-1B work visa is sponsored by an employer. It is capped at 65,000 a year, plus 20,000 more for holders of US master's degrees or higher.
- Because applications exceed the cap, USCIS runs a registration lottery — typically each spring — before employers file full petitions.
